Can I just take thyroid medication instead of taking iodine and selenium? Will it help me get better faster?
Well, you could go to your doctor and ask for thyroid medication if you have hypothyroidism. However, many doctors will not give you thyroid medication unless you have full-blown hypothyroidism. And even if you do, they'll send you to an endocrinologist first.
But the biggest problem is that many people have subclinical hypothyroidism. And therefore your doctor will probably say you don't need thyroid hormone replacement, and won't even send you to the endocrinologist.
They'll say everything looks fine. They'll tell you that you need antidepressants instead, or some other medication, right? So you could go and try that route, but you'll probably find it difficult. And it can become a hassle to actually get your hands on thyroid medication.
Depending on where you live, though, there are integrative doctors that you could find in your area. And they might prescribe you thyroid replacement. But I still think you'd be better off fixing your thyroid by taking the right forms of iodine and selenium instead.
Technically, you may see sudden improvements by being put on thyroid replacement, especially if you have really poor thyroid function. And so you might feel suddenly better. But what I've found is that it probably won't last and it won't get you completely better.
It can also be tricky to find the right medication for you and find the right dosage for you. People often try many different thyroid medications before they find one that really works for them. So overall, you're just better off just taking iodine and selenium for now. Thyroid medication can be considered later, and only if necessary.
Because the goal of my program is not to give you some quick fix. It's about helping you heal on a deep level. And so thyroid medication isn't really the priority here. It doesn't lead to long-term healing. It's still a band-aid approach. And good nutrition should be the first step.
