Is there anything wrong with taking riboflavin-5-phosphate? Can I take it if I have it?
Riboflavin-5-phosphate is considered one of those fancy so-called bioavailable B supplements. The supplement companies call it the "active" form of B2.
They say it's better and "more active" than regular B2. But that's not true, that's just marketing.
Everyone seems to think it's better though. Even many naturopaths tell their patients it's better, yet it's not. It's also hilarious that riboflavin-5-phosphate is actually a synthetic form of B2. You'd think people who are trained in natural medicine would want to use the natural form, which is just plain riboflavin.
Anyway, I digress.
When you take riboflavin-5-phosphate, the "5-phosphate" is cleaved off in your gut.
When it's cleaved off in your gut, you've just left with regular riboflavin anyway. So there really is no difference between the two supplements. One is simply more expensive and makes you think you're doing something better for your health. But in reality, you're not. So you might as well just go with regular B2 riboflavin.
But if you have it already, sure. You might as well take it. Because once it gets into your body, your body breaks it down and uses it just like regular riboflavin anyway. But once you run out of it, just don't buy it again. Just buy regular riboflavin.
